Stoke ‘Hell’ or Stoke ‘Heaven’

Get involved at Stoke Hill Roundabout

Thursday 5th November

8AM – 9AM at Stoke Hill Roundabout (near the mobile phone mast)

Join Stoke Hill Roundabout Action Group for a one hour peaceful peaceful protest to highlight the Council’s inaction in bringing forward safety improvements.

Cyclists, pedestrians and on-foot motorists are all welcome.

The Group will be counting the number of children and vulnerable people trying to cross the roundabout.

They will be asking people what they hope for in a safer roundabout.

The Group will be sending all of this to local Councillors ahead of their next meeting with the roundabout design team.

Cycling UK: £5.62 returned for each £1 spent on cycling

CyclingUK has published a new report titled The Route Forward, which presents a diverse array of cycling schemes from up and down the country and their return on investment over time.

The latest data suggests that for every £1 invested in active travel, £5.62 is returned via downstream savings.

These include physical and mental health savings to the NHS, congestion and pollution reduction, plus local businesses doing better due to those on bikes generally spending more time and money on our High Streets.

The  report states  “Many people are deterred by concerns about road safety. Surveys repeatedly identify fear of traffic as the main barrier to cycling, particularly among women and less confident riders. At the same time, a large majority of people say they would cycle more if safe cycling routes, which are separated from traffic, were available.”

This is the simple, and consistent  message we give Councillors at every opportunity- they can give people freedom,  save public money, support local businesses and revive our High Streets when they make cycling attractive for more people.

Which takes us to….

What next at Dryden Road?

Following the October Highways Committee meeting, we are still waiting for Devon County Council to publish the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) which will spend half million pounds making Dryden Road less safe for people cycling.

Your support and generous donations have been vital in our fight against the plans to make this cycle route less safe for cycling, especially for women and less confident riders.

We shall let you know when  the plans are published and we will be  encouraging you to submit your own objections.
