Talk to your County Council candidates

The 2025 Devon County Council election will take place on 1 May.

The decisions taken by your future County Councillor will have a direct impact on how safe and easy it is to ride a bike on Exeter’s streets.

When candidates knock on your door please ask them what they plan to do to make Exeter safe for people on bikes, foot and wheels and mention one (or all!) of the Campaign’s three priorities for 2025…..

1. Sorting Stoke Arms Roundabout: The most dangerous roundabout on Exeter’s cycle network and a barrier to safe routes for nurses and health workers and students and school children going to Exeter College, University of Exeter, hospitals and local schools.

2. Wonford to Barnfield Road : Fill in the unsafe gaps, such as Honiton Road crossing and Barnfield Road, to complete the route from Wonford to the City Centre

3. Exeter’s first School Streets: Delivering Exeter’s first School Streets will reduce road danger at our schools- Ladysmith, St Michael’s, St Leonard’s and Alphington are all Primary Schools where local residents report that the school drop-off and pick-up can be stressful and unsafe for children.

Good news

This week we have been able to celebrate some good news for people on bikes in Exeter.

Devon County Council have announced how they plan to spend £7.7 M on walking and cycling in Devon in 2025/26

There is welcome news in this announcement, that could help secure some of our priorities, such as school streets and the route from Wonford to the City Centre.

But there will be much work to do to get great and inclusive design, and secure the political will to make it happen.

We have plans forming to do that, but you can act right now by talking about cycling and walking to County Council candidates when they knock on your door.

Could you help the Campaign?

We are looking to fill two important roles

Secretary to help organise our annual AGM and produce a very short Annual Report. Requires a few hours a year and can be very flexible.

Social Secretary to organise a handful of social get togethers to help supporters get to know the Campaign and each other. Basically sorting three evenings a year at a pub and/or café

A comprehensive, convenient and connected network of cycle paths for people of all ages and abilities to choose cycling as the safe, natural choice for everyday journeys.

We advocate not only for people who cycle but for people who walk, wheel and scoot.

We’ve seen some successes, and some reverses, over the last few years but every metre of safe cycling requires hard work and campaigning so that Officers and Councillors feel confident enough to implement schemes.
