Councillors welcome Rifford Road news

In our last Newsletter we let you know about the survey by Campaign volunteers, that found that the Rifford Road improvements had made over half a million miles of journeys on bikes, scooters, wheelchairs and mobility scooters safer and easier every year.

We have been so pleased by the response of our Devon County Councillors to the good news we shared with them…….

‘I think this is great news, to see so many people using this cycle lane is fantastic. Thank you and your team for undertaking this count. The paths enabling those with limited mobility is so good to see, to help people maintain their independence.’

Rifford Road makes it to the House of Commons!

We were surprised and delighted when Steve Race MP mentioned Rifford Road in a speech about the Bus Services Bill in the House of Commons this week.

Steve was speaking about the importance of inclusive design for bus users and for those on foot, wheels and bikes, especially children. Amendments to the Bill had been proposed that would have made it impossible to build safer routes to school.

‘We have a new floating bus stop on Rifford Road in Exeter. Although some residents in the local area have praised the design, others have raised concerns….’

‘We must be able to find a way to deliver protected cycle lanes where necessary for people, including children, to cycle safely, whilst allowing people to embark on and alight from buses….safely and securely’

We agree with Steve.

Our press release and briefings about the Rifford Road survey recognise what Devon County Council have already done to ensure that the improvements are safe and inclusive.

We continue to encourage DCC to monitor the scheme and see if any further action can be taken to minimise friction between users and make it even more inclusive for all.

Please consider dropping steve.race.mp@parliament.uk a brief email to thank him for speaking against amendments to the Bill that would have made building safe, segregated cycle paths impossible.

More good news…..

Councillors act on School Streets

Following public questions asked by Campaign supporters at a Council meeting in early June, we have heard from Cllr Phil Bialyk, Leader of Exeter City Council (ECC), about action he has taken to act on the ECC motion passed in December 2024 calling on Devon County Council to work with schools and communities to on School Streets in Exeter.

Phil has told us ‘I can confirm that we will writing to Devon County Council to request a meeting to discuss school streets in Exeter and what this would mean in terms of capacity and resources.

We will arrange for the meeting to take place before the end of the school term.

We will also arrange for an update to be provided at the next Transport Working Group which is due to take place in September.’

Meanwhile a group of Green Party Devon County Councillors have been very active and written to all schools in Exeter with a School Streets briefing and inviting interested schools to get in touch.

If you are a parent, grandparent or guardian please do contact your school leadership and your County Councillor to ask them to explore School Streets to help solve safety and congestion issues at the start and end of the school day.

And finally…..

Devon County Council have (at last!) installed ANPR cameras at the Wonford Road bus gate. DCC have recorded 1000 drivers unlawfully using the gate in just five days.

Five years have now passed since the restriction was first put in place to enable safer journeys by foot, wheels and bike to the City Centre, hospital and local schools.

Thank you to DCC for this great decision, especially to Cllr Dan Thomas and Cllr Andy Ketchin for speaking up for ANPR.
